Join us on Wednesday 22nd July 2026 for the 11th anniversary edition of the Emma Horrell Canal Races - a special evening of running, community, and remembrance along the beautiful Bridgewater Canal.

For the first time, alongside the popular 10k race, Manchester Road Runners are delighted to introduce a brand-new 5k distance, making this event more accessible to runners of all abilities. Both races follow the Bridgewater Canal towpath on a scenic multi-terrain route, making them ideal for experienced and new runners looking to test themselves as well as those taking on a new challenge.

Both races will start from Race HQ at The Wharf and follow the canal towpath towards Stretford Marina. The new 5k race will finish at Stretford Marina, with all 5k entries including a return bus ticket back to The Wharf, where food and refreshments will be available after the race. The 10k race will continue as an out-and-back route, returning to the Wharf to finish.

With entries starting from just £17 for the 5k and £22 for the 10k, places are expected to fill quickly. All runners will receive a finisher pack including snacks and a bespoke race medal, before joining friends and fellow runners back at the Wharf for post-race celebrations.

This event was renamed in 2024 to honour the memory of Emma Horrell - a much-loved member of Manchester Road Runners who served on the club committee for many years. Emma lived with heart problems herself, yet continuously challenged herself through running while tirelessly raising awareness and funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Emma was passionate about helping others and supporting young people affected by undiagnosed heart conditions. In her memory, all money raised through this event will once again be donated to CRY.

Every week in the UK, at least 12 young people lose their lives to undiagnosed cardiac conditions - often without any warning signs.
