The Middlesbrough MS Therapy Centre is an independent local charity that provides a unique service of low cost therapies for MS sufferers, their carers and their families. Although MS is at yet incurable, much can be done to improve the quality of life of MS sufferers. The MS Therapy Centre opened in 1985 by local people affected by MS. Its aim is to provide MS sufferers in Tees Valley and surrounding areas with therapy, support and information. The centre provides a range of vital therapies aimed at limiting the problems of MS. We are not part of a larger organisation and are totally self funding. We receive no government funding and raise our income through member’s donations towards the cost of treatment along with the fundraising efforts of our members, volunteers and local businesses.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our page about raising money as I run my 100th marathon.

The story starts in 1999. My friend’s mother had Multiple Sclerosis and was receiving superb support from the MS Therapy Centre in Middlesbrough https://www.middlesbroughmstherapy.org.uk. You will see the centre provides a range of essential therapies aimed at limiting the problems of MS. Currently these therapies are high dosage oxygen treatment, physiotherapy, yoga, therapeutic massage, reflexology aromatherapy and counselling. They also provide support and some therapy to stroke victims, cancer patients, ME sufferers, long COVID and people with other neurological disorders.

We decided we’d like to raise some money for their work and I agreed to run the London Marathon on April 18th 1999. My wife Mary and 2 sons, Ben (aged 11) and Andrew (aged 8) were very excited as I completed it in 3’22”. Rather foolishly I carried on running long distances all over the world and my wife and 2 sons started running as well.

Exactly 27 and a half years later, on October 18th 2026 I’m running my 100th marathon - the Yorkshire Marathon. This time I’ll be looking at the backs of Andrew and Ben as they zoom off for their 26 miles! They may complete in 3’22” but I’m going to be nearer 4 hours or maybe even slower!! Whatever, we all need your encouragement and a big donation will help with the pain in the last 6 miles. The more money, the more people can benefit 🤗🤗
