Story

(english translation below)

-----------------------------------

Hi there, my name is Maria Artiles, I am 19 years old and 3 years and 5 months ago my life changed.

In May 2020 my dad was diagnosed with MND (Motor Neuron Disease), and everyday since we fight to coexist with the disease that takes everything away from my dad and family. Anyone who has met him knows that Simon and rugby go in the same sentence, as rugby means the world to him. From being a rugby player to co-founding Trust Rugby International with his brother and a friend of theirs, and coaching their unified rugby team, until the disease took that away from him too.

Every rugby player has another they want to be like or look up to, for my dad it's Doddie Weir, former Scotland and British & Irish Lion, and he followed him through his MND journey too, which my dad jokes that maybe he asked for his dream to be like him too much…

Naturally, he has always told us about him and the impact he has had on him, so all of us in the family consider him as one of us, which is why on the 26th of November after his passing, we all felt his loss strongly and I think the whole rugby community felt that way too, because such was his impact and legacy on everyone.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) the 26th of November happens to be my birthday too, and I have been thinking for a while how to celebrate my 20th, as it would be strange after what happened.

That's why I've decided that I'm doing a countdown of 4 weeks from the 30th October until my birthday, Nov 26th, and I'm going to go for a run every day with the goal of running 100km during that time until that date. So I invite you to join the cause, being part of the challenge, by donating and/or going for a run and counting your kilometres to add them to the challenge which you can follow through my instagram and facebook @mariaabgivingback . All proceeds will go to the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation.

For my dad, for Doddie and all patients and relatives affected by MND.
