Story
I am raising money in memory of my friend Sarah and to support those who have mental health issues.Sarah was an amazing individual who was a trailblazer in interventional neuroradiology in the UK. She was a wonderful mother and friend to so many who loved her dearly. We will all miss her.
Mental health remains an underfunded problem in our population with 1 in 4 people needing support at any time in the uk. Doctors are particularly vulnerable with 60 % suffering from burnout and 40% suffering from anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Disappointingly, there remain huge barriers to doctors seeking support due to cultural issues within the profession. Stigma around mental health and fear of vulnerability perpetuate isolation and a lack of support.
Suicide is twice as likely in doctors, with female doctors in particular being most at risk.
Sadly, the issues surrounding the provision of care for doctors remain under the radar because many are reluctant to seek help. This is perpetuated by a culture where admitting vulnerability is equated with ‘failure’ or weakness.
I want to create a culture where every person with mental health issues, regardless of their background, can feel safe to disclose their fears and receive help and support.
I am cycling from London to Paris in September over 4 days. I hope to raise money for Mind and also help to reduce the stigma by being open and honest about an issue that potentially affects all doctors in the profession.
