Marija's fundraiser for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

Marija Kovacevic is raising money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

Team: Wimbledon Village Stables Team 2026

We raise money to save the lives of people affected by cancer, everywhere. From funding state-of-the-art equipment and groundbreaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, we will never stop looking for ways to save the lives of people affected by cancer.

Story

I still remember my mum's face when she brought the news to me that my father had been diagnosed with cancer. Adenocarcinoma, the most aggressive form of lung cancer. He was given two months to live and we lost him eight months later. With that, everything changed. I was 14 at the time and much remained unclear to me. What still stays with me is how this disease impacts us all, in many ways. It impacts our families, our dearest friends and colleagues, and leaves deep marks on our own selves. Although, with recent advances in medical research and technology developments some forms of cancer can be treated successfully, many still remain a mystery. Cancers are complex and require complex care, including personalised approaches and highly targeted therapies. Further research is essential to develop better treatments.

The Royal Marsden Hospital in London is the first hospital in the world dedicated entirely to the cancer treatments and cancer research. All their findings and discoveries are shared globally, with medical and scientific communities across the world, helping to shape cancer care for everyone. Through the hospital's charity, The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, essential funds are raised to improve the lives of everyone affected by cancer. These funds go directly to personalized patient treatments and further cancer research, which ultimately leads to better outcomes.

This year, I am doing something about it!

As a proud member of Wimbledon Village Stables (WVS), I am excited to be taking part in the WVS's 52nd Sponsored (Horse) Ride. This is an event where each rider raises funds to support a charity close to their hearts. For me, this one is The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

On Saturday, 12th September 2026, we will set off on a 10-miles (16 km) ride through Wimbledon and Richmond parks with our lovely horses. Although, 10 miles might not sound like a particularly long distance, it is about as far as we can ride in London without causing a traffic madness. Do know, this distance is still much longer than they do at the Royal Ascot! To make the things more fun, we will be swapping our usual equestrian outfits for fancy/crazy/fun/ridiculous costumes. This is going to be a real challenge! Staying in the saddle may or may not be part of the plan. We will have to keep a bit of a space in our minds for another challenge, weather, in particular. As there is no guarantee of stable weather in London, we are ready for rain, wind, sunshine and the classic combination of all three in one ride! This is going to be a fun day, full of horses, laughs, good moods and all in support of causes that matter to us.

My aim with this ride is to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, to support the wonderful work they do for patients. If you could, please consider making a contribution. Any contributions are welcomed and much appreciated!

And if you happen to be around, please do come and cheer us on! We will be parading down the High Street at around 9:15 AM before we set off, and then again when we return at around 12:15 PM. Hopefully we will come back in one piece and still in costumes.

Thank you very much for your support, it means the world to us!
