My wife Sally and I are travelling to Nakuru, Kenya in May 2026 to support the construction and maintenance of schools in a developing area of the country. Derby County community trust have been organising trips to 5 schools, and a sixth new one in 2026, to help out in those very deprived areas. The program has been running for around 15 years, but there is always work to be done so Sally and I will be helping out in whatever ways we can.

We have previously been heavily involved in a local children’s charity, Derby TOC H Children’s Camp, but we now realise the needs in Kenya are even greater. So next year we have decided to step it up a gear and go international. The challenge of working in Africa is even more daunting, taking us well outside our comfort zones, but we hope the rewards will pay dividend.

The schools provide a free education for children from underprivileged backgrounds, with little chance of investment in county. Therefore without projects like this the children would have little chance of getting an education.

We will be working in a range of roles in building, renovation and general upkeep of the schools and potentially also doing some teaching at the schools. All the materials to complete the work need to be funded hence why we are both fundraising towards the cost.
