Cape Wrath Ultra 420km · 19 May 2024

Ocular melanoma is so rare and the prognosis often so overwhelming, that patients frequently report feeling totally isolated. We advocate for change by uniting stakeholders against ocular melanoma cancers so people receive the treatment, information and support they need.

Story

After finding a new found love for running during the Covid-19 lockdown and completing a 50km and 100km ultra marathon, I am taking part in the Cape Wrath 420km run. Equivalent to 260 miles or almost 10 marathons in 8 days. In addition we will also be climbing over 10,000 meters in elevation (yes, that’s more than Everest). As you can imagine I am going to be spending the next 12 months training hard not only physically but mentally too.

I have decided to run for OcuMel UK. A charity that help patients with ocular melanoma. Many of your won’t know that my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and after a mastectomy and gruelling chemo was then diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma a short 18 months later and so faced more difficult treatment. She was her usual determined self and faced everything with an incredible attitude. Thankfully she continues to do extremely well. Ocular Melanoma is extremely rare with only 5 in every 1 million adults being diagnosed. So as with any rare disease it is underfunded in treatment and research and so for those reasons I would like to raise as much money as possible to help support OcuMel.
