Mark's 96km Walk for Fountain of Peace

Mark Macklin is raising money for Fountain of Peace

Sponsored Walk for Fountain of Peace · 23 May 2026

We care for children who have been orphaned or abandoned in the Kyenjojo District of Western Uganda. We are the only registered children's home in the district and provide for every child as if they were our own, giving them a permanent home and all the love and support they need along the way.

Story

The Fountain of Peace

The Kyenjojo region in Western Uganda is stunningly beautiful, but also marred by extreme poverty. Many children are left orphaned, or abandoned due to circumstances often beyond parental control.

Over the last 12 years, the Fountain of Peace Children's Home has provided a safe and loving home for 96 babies and children who have been orphaned or abandoned. There is a Babies’ Home for the first 2 years of life, from where the children move on to small Family units for 8 children with a resident surrogate Mum and a Nanny. There is a school on-site providing holistic education right up to vocational training level, and also a large farm where the children can learn agricultural skills.

What am I raising funds for?

For 12 years, the staff who work as nannies for the children have had to walk 8 km to their homes in the nearest town - a daily commute of 4 hours exposed in all weathers!

Work has been progressed over recent years to provide an accommodation block within the immediate village area which will allow the staff to stay onsite.

To finish this work additional funds are required and I am hoping that the fundraising from my sponsored walk will help contribute to completing this work.

If you are able to, please give generously to this amazing charity which is giving a bright hope and future to those who would otherwise have neither.

What am I doing?

My goal is to walk 96 km, one km for every child at Fountain of Peace, along The Ridgeway, an ancient 5000 year-old trail that runs through the Chiltern Hills near my home.

Walking this distance is likely to take me over 20 hours in total and I'm hoping to complete this over the course of several days, starting on 23 May.

Although I enjoy treks, I've never attempted anything of this distance before and so I'm excited but also quite nervous of what I will feel like by the time I reach the end!

How did I get involved in this charity?

The Fountain of Peace has been one of the charities supported by our local church for a number of years and we are good friends with a number of Trustees of the charity.

We have been supporters from afar for some years, but in July 2026 my family and I are visiting the Fountain of Peace in Uganda for 2 weeks! It is going to be my first time in Africa.

We are very much looking forward to meeting the children and all those who are involved in looking after them, and doing whatever we can to help whilst we are there.
