Taking on the Fred Whitton for Blood Cancer UK 🚴‍♂️

Mark Nash is raising money for Blood Cancer UK

Fred Whitton Challenge · 10 May 2026

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

Recently my mum has been diagnosed with blood cancer. She is managing well and is in a good place, but it has brought home just how many families are affected by this disease. My grandfather also died of leukaemia in the 1960s, so this is something that has touched my family across generations.

Blood cancer is the UK’s third biggest cancer killer, and around 41,000 people are diagnosed every year. I wanted to do something to raise awareness and support research — this cause is very close to my heart.

So on Sunday 10 May, I’ll be taking on the legendary cycling sportive, the Fred Whitton. It spans 112 miles of punishing terrain in the heart of the Lake District, including climbs such as Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose and Blea Tarn passes — almost 4,000m of climbing. With gradients as steep as 30% at the 98-mile mark, this is widely regarded as the most challenging one-day ride in the UK — more of an ordeal than a ride, especially given the likely weather we’ll face.

I’m supporting Blood Cancer UK, a community dedicated to beating blood cancer. They fund vital research and support those affected. Since 1960, they have invested over £500 million in research, transforming treatments and saving lives. Right now, they are funding 360 researchers and staff across the UK searching for the next breakthrough.

If you’re able to donate — even a small amount — it would mean a great deal. Every contribution helps move us closer to the day we beat blood cancer.
