Story

About Mom:

Mom was so full of life — always out and about, dancing, singing, and even taking part in water aerobics at the local pool. She absolutely doted on her two granddaughters. Yes, she was 81, but a very young 81 — vibrant, energetic, and full of love. She gave that love freely and was the strength behind so many joyful moments in our family.

In April/May 2024, our beloved mom was diagnosed with lung cancer — news that came as a devastating shock. It felt as though our world came crashing down.

She underwent two courses of chemotherapy, but sadly, the treatment proved too invasive. She also had several sessions of radiotherapy to help manage her pain.

In July/August 2024, Mom was admitted to Myton Hospice for pain management. Whilst we were receiving palliative care at home , the staff at Myton provided the kind of specialist support that brought real comfort and relief. Their care was exceptional, and we will always remember the kindness they showed.

We did everything we could in the months that followed. After meeting with our oncologist in October 2024, we were told Mom had months, not years. As a family, we chose to focus on making the most of the time we had — planning birthdays, Christmas, New Year, and especially our wedding in November.

Sadly, just a few weeks before the wedding, Mom was admitted to Warwick Hospital with breathing difficulties, low oxygen, and an infection. She spent 17 days there. In a touching gesture, the hospital chaplain arranged for a private ceremony in the chapel following the legal wedding at Solihull Registry Office — allowing Mom to be part of that special day. We are forever grateful for that moment.

Mom came home a week later, and we celebrated both the wedding and her return with a family lunch. She made it through Christmas and New Year, and we were so thankful for those precious memories. In February 2025, she celebrated her 81st birthday alongside my 50th — milestones that meant the world to her and to us — along with Mother's Day.

Always proud of her appearance, on 15 March she felt well enough to visit her regular hairdresser — a small step, but one that meant a lot. She looked beautiful and felt wonderful afterward, even booking a perm for the following Friday. Sadly, just days later, she began experiencing intense pain in her leg. We initially thought it might be a pulled muscle, but after a doctor’s visit, she was admitted once again to Warwick Hospital. The cancer had spread, and this time it had caused several fractures in her hip. She never did get that perm.

She spent a week in Warwick before being transferred back to Myton Hospice on 27 March 2025. There, she received compassionate, attentive care from nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, and volunteers. While her pain never fully went away, she was kept as comfortable as possible and always surrounded by kindness.

After six weeks at Myton, our beautiful mom passed away peacefully on Friday, 9 May 2025.

As a family, words cannot fully express our gratitude to everyone at Myton Hospice in Warwick. Even in the hardest times, the atmosphere was never heavy — the staff were warm, kind, and brought light to our darkest days. Their dedication meant everything, and their support is something we’ll never forget.

To us, they are the true unsung heroes — deserving of every bit of recognition and support we can offer.

If I can raise funds in honour of this incredible team and the care they provide, I will be truly grateful. Your support means the world.

Let’s do this in loving memory of a wife, mom, sister, and grandmother — and for all the families that Myton supports every single day.

With heartfelt thanks,

John, Sharon, Mark & Kate Purser
