Story
In May I will be cycling from London to Barcelona; a distance of 1400km over 11 days, and raising money in the process to support of the Worlds first paediatric transplant trials network (ATICUS). This has been set up by Cure Leukaemia as part of a long term goal to eradicate all forms of childhood blood related cancer. Not only does the trial network attempt to save the lives of children where conventional therapies have not worked, but the learning from the trials is shared Globally - the impact goes well beyond the individual children being treated in the UK; it has the potential to benefit youngsters in many other Countries
Further details of the Charity and the ATICUS network it supports can be found at: www.cureleukaemia.co.uk/about. It is upsetting to see anyone, let alone children, suffer from diseases like this, which is why I am motivated again to support such a transformational cause whilst undertaking another demanding challenge. As I am funding the cycle ride myself, all monies raised will go to the Charity
This latest challenge also comes at a particularly thought provoking time for me personally….
It is 20 years since a great and inspirational friend passed away, having suffered from a form of blood related cancer. This led to me undertaking my first endurance fundraising event in his memory when I elongated the disciplines of a triathlon; undertaking a 3 miles pool swim in the SW of England, cycling the length of the UK, and then running a marathon across the North Coast of Scotland
And it is 10 years since my relationship with Cure Leukaemia began when I cycled London to Paris for the first time in 2015, from that point all my fundraising efforts have been focussed on supporting them
Over the years, in addition to the events mentioned above, I have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, run the Amsterdam marathon, cycled London to Paris four more times, simulated the London to Paris cycle ride twice when the scheduled cycle ride was postponed due to COVID, and cycled the whole Tour de France route one week before the professionals.
Despite being older and finding the whole process way more demanding as a result, I am deeply committed to what Cure Leukaemia does. Please help me as I continue to try and make a difference; the chances are that we all know someone who has suffered from cancer - this is for them
Thanks in advance
Tim xx
