Story
On the 7th of July, three intrepid members of the Marsh Multinational team (Martin Pugh, Kevin Walker and Jennet Lewis) will be embarking upon a 5 day, 90km hike through the second largest canyon in the world - The Fish River Canyon, located in the desert in southeast Namibia. As one of our generous recent supporters put it - " Out of shape insurance professionals in a hostile desert probably miles away from any Michelin starred restaurants".
"90km in 5 days? A casual stroll!" you might proclaim, HOWEVER I invite you to picture the following, if you will:
- Kevin is the group leader
- We will not have a guide
- Hiking South Africa rates it the following: Difficulty (fitness): 8 (out of 10): Difficult i.e. Need to be fit for long distances. The desert environment is also uniquely challenging.
- Once you're in the canyon, you're either coming out at the other end or not at all.
- We will be sleeping in the open air - the tents have been sacrificed to make more space for rations of cigarettes (for Martin), whisky (for Kevin), red wine (for, let's face it, everyone) and Jennet's teddy bear.
- Kevin has banned us from taking a satellite phone
For those of you who know Kevin Walker, you'll know he is quite unreliable and WE MAY NOT SURVIVE. To make it all worth it, we would like to ask you to kindly sponsor our efforts.
Photographic evidence will be provided afterwards.
One of our compatriots on the hike has recently lost his aunt to pancreatic cancer and Pancreatic Cancer UK is the charity that we have decided to raise funds for.
It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months. Survival rates have improved enormously for most cancers, yet for pancreatic cancer, this is not the case.
Pancreatic Cancer UK is dedicated to taking on this injustice using every possible means. They're supporting people with pancreatic cancer now, campaigning, and funding vital research to transform the future. Help them to make the breakthroughs that people with pancreatic cancer so desperately need.
