Story
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is a pernicious and debilitating condition that affects millions of people all over the world. It's poorly diagnosed because the symptoms are so complex but it's effects on the nervous and immune systems are very real.
My sister and a family friend have suffered from M.E. for most of their lives. Although they are able to manage the condition to some extent it still has a massive impact on their ability to live what most of us consider a normal life. Many other sufferers have it far worse.
"Long Covid" has received a lot of publicity since the pandemic hit, and the symptoms are similar, but imagine suffering from brain fog, severe fatigue, breathlessness and all the rest for most of your life!
I'm doing this challenge to raise money for Action for ME. They provide support for ME sufferers in the UK and conduct research and awareness activities that have a global impact.
Sailing to Baltimore (the one in Ireland near Fastnet Rock, not the one in USA!) is something I have done before, but it's not to be sneezed at. Between 3.5 and 5 days single-handed sailing across some rather exciting bits of ocean is quite a challenge - though a drop in the ocean compared to the "Full Jester" that goes from Plymouth to New York....maybe next time!
It's obviously rather weather-dependent and while I'm braced for a certain amount of discomfort, I won't do anything foolhardy. I'm planning on making several updates in the runup to the start, so stay tuned, and don't forget to add your GiftAid to any donation you are kind enough to make!
Action for ME is now a supported charity in Benevity, so if, like me, you're a Cadence employee, you can get an even better multiplier by using Cadence's Benevity Charitable contribution to double your donation.
Thankyou!
