Story
My son Tommy was first diagnosed with Hydrocephalus following a catastrophic brain bleed at a few days old and had his first operation at 2 weeks old.
His Hydrocephalus did settle but it reoccured after he had contracted meningitis and he then had to have an operation for a shunt. In total Tommy had 10 brain operations due to his Hydrocephalus.
Tommy sadly passed away in August 2023 and although he did have ongoing health issues we are still awaiting results as to why 💙
I am doing Ironman Wales. 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles cycling & 26.2 miles running.
I will be doing this in Tommy's memory for Harry's Hat. I think its really important to raise awareness of Hydrocephalus and help them to provide support to children and their families.
Harry's Hydrocephalus Awareness Trust (Harry's HAT) was founded in 2018, the charity is user-led. The aim of the charity is to make life better for children with Hydrocephalus and their families.
Every year 1 in 770 babies will develop Hydrocephalus, there is no cure and it is currently the most common reason for brain surgery in children. The charity exists to raise awareness, promote training and to improve patient care, support families to reduce isolation and to campaign for better awareness of infant head circumference measurement.
