Story
I am participating in the Tour de Kernow/Pedal4Patients Cycling Challenge again in September this year in memory of Nicky (my late wife), who sadly passed away in February 2025 after a brave and dignified battle against secondary breast cancer. She was only 55.
During 16 months of treatment Nicky benefitted from the work of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity in several ways. She received a 'Heart of Headland' personalised gift box of specially selected goods to help alleviate the physical and mental side effects of chemotherapy treatment. In addition she was grateful for services provided at The Cove Support Centre, which the Charity supports through its 'Cove Amenity Fund' and appreciated environmental enhancements around the Hospital funded by the Charity that help to improve the experience of patients whilst undergoing treatment.
By the date of the event (17 - 19 September 2026) I will be 70 and I am not a regular cyclist so taking on three day's of cycling covering about 180 miles and approximately 12,000 feet ascent will be a significant challenge as it was last year, too. However, I feel compelled to continue raising funds in memory of Nicky and to benefit existing and future patients in Cornwall who receive support from the Charity.
Nicky's story is my main inspiration but I also have in mind a couple of friends who are currently receiving treatment and care for cancer at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Cancer really does affect all of us and I hope that funds raised through this event will enable more help for patients and their families finding themselves in such a terrible plight
Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity:
Together we can do more for our hospitals and patients.
Patients are diagnosed and treated faster, families and loved ones are more comfortable, and staff travel out of county for specialised training - all through generous support given to Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity.
Your support moves care at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro, West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance & St Michael's Hospital, Hayle), beyond the basic provision of the NHS.
