Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating muscle-wasting disease. It is the most common and severe form of muscular dystrophy. Diagnosed in childhood, it mainly affects boys. Started by families affected by the disease, Duchenne UK is the leading DMD charity in the UK: connecting the best researchers with industry, the NHS and families to advance and accelerate every stage of drug development. I got involved with Duchenne and the Dash in 2017, my wife worked in the nursery looking after Connor when he was diagnosed and a friend asked me to ride London to Paris, which I was a little bit worried about. Myself and family have all become great friends with Connors family and we have all been involved with fundraising and awareness. We have great fun preparing for the ride and the ride itself has a great camaraderie as we see many old faces on the way. We have had great supporters along the way, meeting at the final pub stop on the UK side with our families of wives, kids, mother in laws and friends. My daughter rode with me for the last 3 years. My son missed out due to his birthday but last year he was able to ride also. Myself, Daisy and Freddie rode last year and not to miss out Sarah my wife joined us volunteering into a support car. It’s a great ride a great cause and we can see the difference it is making to many of the boys. If you are thinking of doing this, just do it. You are in great hands and its an amazing experience.
