I’m running the Half Marathon for the Sussex Heart Charity
It has been a few years since I last ran a half marathon, but this year I’m lacing up my trainers again for a cause that means a great deal to me – the Sussex Heart Charity (SHC).
I have worked in a variety of cardiac settings over the past 20 years, supporting patients at many different stages of their heart health journey. Now, as the lead for the cardiac rehabilitation team in Brighton and Haywards Heath, I see every day how heart disease affects individuals and families across Sussex.
For decades, SHC has supported local cardiac services, helping to deliver high-quality care, funding essential equipment, and providing education and training that directly improves patient outcomes. Their support enables teams like ours to give patients the best possible chance of recovery and improved quality of life.
Throughout my career I’ve been privileged to support countless patients through some of the most challenging times of their lives. Their courage and determination inspire me every day.
Last year, heart disease became even more personal when a close friend underwent major heart surgery. I sat with my friend and his wife as he recovered, and it reminded me just how frightening and life-changing a heart condition can be. Thanks to excellent hospital care and cardiac rehabilitation – supported by SHC – he was able to rebuild his strength and get back to his family.
The Sussex Heart Charity also supports the wider community, funding life-saving initiatives such as CPR and AED training and helping to place defibrillators across Sussex. Their work truly saves lives.
That’s why I’m taking on this challenge – for my patients, for my friend, and for every family affected by heart disease.
Any donation, big or small, will make a real difference. Thank you so much for your support.
Martina
