Story
I'm running the Manchester Marathon on 27th April to raise money for Sunflower Manchester – a local charity dedicated to supporting Ukrainians affected by Russia’s brutal invasion.
Just last week, on Palm Sunday, my wife's hometown was devastated by a deadly missile attack targeting a civilian area. Thirty-two people were killed. Ukraine has been enduring these barbaric assaults for over three years. I want to do my part to support those who have been injured, who’ve suffered unimaginable hardship, and who have been forced to flee their homes due to Putin’s relentless attempt to destroy their country.
Sunflower Manchester is a registered charity that began its journey in February 2022, right here in Manchester. Thanks to the tireless efforts of a dedicated team of volunteers, over 100 tonnes of aid have been sent to Ukraine – reaching the front lines, hospitals, and communities devastated by war. The charity has supported over 500 families adapting to life in the UK, offering both practical help and emotional support. Sunflower has also hosted more than 20 cultural and informational events across the North of England and continues to run vital sessions for Ukrainians living in Greater Manchester.
The Sunflower team is constantly working to expand its impact, partnering with local councils and authorities to support Ukrainian-led projects and initiatives.
At its core, the organisation’s mission is to help those in need.
Its volunteers are driven by kindness, compassion, understanding, and mutual support during these incredibly turbulent times.
