The Mary Byram Sports Day · 5 July 2025

The Kirkwood exists to improve the quality of life for local people, against all odds. We help those in our care to live well and make the most of every single day. We make the complex simple by focusing on what's important, and we support families and loved ones to live on and live well.

Story

As a family we are hosting the second Mary Byram Sports Day, in memory of our amazing mum/nana, who passed away at Kirkwood Hospice at Christmas 2022.

Having been taken care of by the hospice in various ways over 10 years, Mary had come to know and love the place. It was a place she felt comfortable, so in 2022 when her care sadly turned to end-of-life care, she chose to spend her last few days there.

She was taken care of impeccably, from the support team who came around to serve drinks, to the nurses, doctors and the priest who did a blessing in her final hours.

They welcomed our huge family into the hospice to stay with her at all hours. We laughed, we cried, we reminisced, and we were able to be with her in those final hours.

As a family, we will never forget what they did. In the words of our amazing matriarch Nana B, they are “marvellous”.

In 2023, we hosted our first sports day and raised over £8,000. This year, we want to raise the same again.

4 teams - SB Homes, Byram Construction, Empire House/Sass Coffee House and DM Brewster Groundworks - will go head-to-head in a show of competitive spirit.

Sports include rounders, tug of war, relay races, golf targets, archery and much more.

But not only will it be a fun day for those taking part, but spectators too with a bar, food, stalls, a bouncy castle and children’s games, going on well into the evening.

There will also be a raffle, with over 25 amazing prizes, from 18 holes of golf for four at Woodsome Hall Golf Club, to a £50 Bolster Moor Farm Shop voucher.

For those who can’t make it but still want to donate, please make a donation using JustGiving.
