Books opened doors for me that I didn't know existed — giving me knowledge, a social world, and a quiet confidence that carried me currently into university, volunteer work, and a role as a librarian at Pocket Libraries in Nairobi.

But not every young person gets that door. Right now, 273 million children are out of school globally, and here in Kenya, over half of primary learners cannot comprehend a Grade Three-level passage.
