Maryam's fundraiser for Companions Educational Trust

Maryam Ahmad is raising money for Companions Educational Trust
Companions Educational Trust is a registered charity supporting home-educated Muslim children. We provide face-to-face group classes and a welcoming space for children to learn, play and socialise throughout the day. Our classes take place in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Companions Educational Trust seeks to reduce the burden on parents by providing affordable learning and social opportunities for Muslim children. Our charity is run by volunteers, and every donation made goes directly toward funding the education of our students. The generosity of the community helps to pay for our classroom, teaching, and the purchase of textbooks and classroom equipment. Please consider making a donation to us today. We are a UK registered charity and can receive Gift Aid.

Story

This Ramadan, please consider making a donation to this small but important local charity which has been working hard for almost three years to support Muslim children in West Yorkshire.

The charity already supports over 20 children and with your donations they could support even more.

About Companions Educational Trust

Companions Educational Trust is a charity which provides affordable, face-to-face classes and learning activities for home-educated Muslim children, which they would otherwise be unable to access.

About home-education

More children in the UK are being home-educated every year, including Muslim children. There are lots of reasons why Muslim parents are choosing home-education. For some, it is to protect their children from bullying, exposure to inappropriate behaviour, or discrimination and being treated with suspicion by school teachers because of their visibly Muslim appearance. Others disagree with the schooling system which elevates teachers to figures of authority and morality, over and above that of the parents. Many Muslim parents view the national curriculum as both inadequate and in some respects harmful to their deen. Companions Educational Trust seeks to support all home-educated Muslim children to be educated in a way that is in accordance with their deen.

Home-educating children is extremely challenging and parents make many sacrifices in order to do it. Home-education leads to families being financially disadvantaged as parents must take on the full-time responsibility for their child’s education. Despite continuing to pay taxes, home-educating parents receive no financial support from the government and have to pay for teaching and educational resources. This is not an insignificant cost, particularly where there are multiple children in a single household. These families are therefore doubly disadvantaged. They do their best to keep their children safe, but as a consequence they lose income and face more expenses in order to educate their children effectively.

Companions Educational Trust seeks to reduce the burden on parents by providing affordable learning and social opportunities for Muslim children. The charity is run by volunteers and every donation made goes directly toward the education of the students. The generosity of the community helps to pay for the classroom, teaching, and the purchase of textbooks and classroom equipment.

Even a small donation goes a long way. A donation of £20 covers the cost of renting a classroom for half a day. A donation of £10 covers the cost of a history textbook.
