Story

I’m running a 100km Ultra Marathon to raise money for a disease I had.

In late 2019 I started to collapse, and a few days later I couldn’t walk to the end of the street or open a bottle with my hands. After all sorts of tests, as a lab rat for a few weeks, they figured out it was Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disease that damages your nervous system. DJ-ing was out of the question, but it was also Covid, so that helped. After a few months I could use my arms and legs again, but a massive physical fatigue stayed for 1.5 years before it finally disappeared. It was purely physical though, so luckily I could still work in the studio handling a mouse (I made most of the ‘Frisky Biscuits’ album on Toolroom during that period).

In 2021 I was fully recovered and I started to slowly run again. And one thing led to another….

On May 23rd it’s happening: 2.5 marathons in one go as part of a scarily long race from London to Brighton. Running from morning till evening, arriving at the Brighton Music Conference (BMC)

I count my blessings that I had a relatively mild version, with “just” damaged arm and leg nerves. Some GBS victims can’t breathe or swallow on their own and are hospitalised for years — while being 100% mentally sharp. The horror. So this charity is raising money for research, but also to give a bit of awareness to those silently lying in rooms with drawn curtains for years. People you don’t hear about, but they’re there. Maybe my effort can also give a bit of hope to them, knowing that full recovery is possible and that you can be physically strong again.
