Master's Fund Inter-Medical School Fundraising Walk

David Jefferys is raising money for Worshipful Society of Apothecaries

Inter-Medical School Fundraising Walk · 22 April 2026

One of London's ancient Livery Companies, the Apothecaries are the face of the medical profession in the City of London, and the former licensing body for all medical practitioners in England and Wales. Today we support medical education, helping medical students struggling under a mountain of debt, and running medical diplomas and exams from our historic Hall.

Story

Following the successful walk I took last year for the Master's Fund, the Mistress Apothecary and I have decided to expand the initiative this year. There will be two walks, one on Wednesday 22 April and the second on Saturday 16 May 2026. The two days can be summarised as the 4Fs: fun, fellowship, fitness and fundraising.

We will visit the sites of the 12 former medical schools of London and also include the London School of Pharmacy (now known as the UCL School of Pharmacy). Members of the Society and of the two Faculties and of the Friends are welcome to join us - you'll just need to register via the LMS. We hope you will get sponsorship to raise funds for the Apothecaries General Charity (aka the Master's Fund), which supports medical and pharmacy students.

I hope there will be great conversations during the walks with shared memories from our time as students at the great institutions. For Guy's graduates the walks coincide with the peak of the 300th anniversary celebrations. As we share happy memories of our student days, it will be great that we are helping those students of today who find themselves in difficulties.

The Master’s Fund helps fund financial hardship grants to medical and pharmacy students in their final or penultimate year of study who are struggling financially and at risk of dropping out. Each of the medical schools in England and Wales are invited to nominate students who might be in need. Last year 81 students were awarded financial hardship grants of between £750 and £1,500 and a further 7 students were given emergency grants which together totalled £12,540.
