Story
So, at the tender young age of 71, I’ve decided that it’s time for my last big cycling fundraising challenge. I’m cycling JOGLE (John O’Groats to Lands End) with two of my buddies, Martin and Richard, supported by another two buddies, Neil and Margaret, commencing Saturday 24 May. I’ve decided to fundraise for Alzheimer's Research UK, in memory of Rose, my wonderful mother-in-law, and I’d really appreciate your support.
Rose passed away during the Covid Pandemic,. She had been admitted to hospital to have hip surgery and tragically contracted Covid symtoms, was not discharged, and died in hospital.
Rose had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Vascular Dementia and had been living with the condition for many years. Teresa, supported by me, became her almost daily carers so we were frontline in getting to know how the conditions developed.
Its a cruel desease and in the UK it's estimated that 7.1% of older people are affected by the various dementia deseases which encompasses Alzheimer's. This translates to roughly 944,000 people in the UK currently living with dementia. Additionally, about one in three people born in the UK will develop dementia in their lifetime. This is extraordinary and will in some way may affect all of us in either developing the desease ourselves or being supportive of family and friends with these conditions.
So in memory of Rose and for future sufferers, I've decided to devote this ride to raise funds for Alzheimer's UK.
So please donate whatever you can to this so worthwhile charity.
Note from Alzheimers UK:
Every 3 minutes dementia steals a happily ever after. Research is our only chance of changing the ending for people affected by dementia.
We are the UK's leading dementia research charity. We exist for a cure.
Your donation helps our scientists and researchers find new ways to diagnose dementia, develop new treatments and find a cure for dementia.
