From One Mother’s Story to Another 🤍

For those who know us through RF Café & Bakery, you’ll usually see us behind the scenes of the business, sharing our food, cakes, coffee and everything that comes with running our café and bakery.

But today, we want to share something much more personal.

Last week, my husband and I welcomed our baby girl into the world.

We are now a family of four, with two beautiful children that we are incredibly grateful for.

But getting here was not easy.

Both of my labours and births have been extremely difficult, but in very different ways.

My first birth was incredibly difficult and had a lasting emotional impact on me.

This time, there were serious complications and moments when my life was at risk. It was one of the most frightening experiences of my life, and there were moments when I genuinely didn’t know what would happen.

I have come through it safely, but the experience has had a lasting impact on me, both physically and emotionally.

I am incredibly grateful to Allah that I am here today, that my daughter is here safely, and that I have been given the chance to watch my children grow.

Going through both experiences has made me realise just how important maternity care is.

It is not only about the moment a baby is born.

It is about supporting a mother before birth, caring for her during birth and looking after her afterwards.

Pregnancy can bring excitement and happiness, but it can also bring fear, uncertainty and anxiety.

During birth, a woman can feel incredibly vulnerable. She may be frightened, in pain or facing complications she never expected.

And after the baby arrives, while everyone naturally focuses on the newborn, there is still a mother who has just been through something enormous.

She may be recovering physically.

She may be processing what happened.

She may need reassurance, support and someone simply to listen.

My own experiences have shown me how much compassionate maternity care can matter.

They have also made me think about mothers around the world who do not have access to the care and support they need.

For some women, there may be limited access to hospitals, trained healthcare professionals, essential medicines, equipment or emergency maternity care.

For others, support before and after birth may be extremely limited.

For too many mothers, childbirth can still be a matter of life and death.

That is why we want to help.

Through Benefit Mankind, we are raising funds for mothers and babies internationally, helping provide maternity care and support where it is needed most.

This campaign is bigger than my own story.

It is about recognising that wherever a mother lives in the world, she deserves to be cared for.

She deserves to feel safe.

She deserves to be heard.

She deserves support before birth, during birth and afterwards.

And every baby deserves the best possible chance of arriving safely into the world.

We know we cannot change everything.

But if my experiences can help another mother receive the care she needs, then something incredibly difficult can become something positive.
