Story
After years of setbacks and diary clashes, I will finally make it to the start line of the Marathon des Sables Legendary.
From 5 to 11 April 2026, I’ll be taking on 270 km (this year extended to mark the 40th anniversary) across the Sahara Desert, a six-stage, self-sufficient ultramarathon often described as “the toughest footrace on Earth.”
Temperatures can exceed 40°C, I’ll carry everything I need on my back, food, kit, sleeping gear, and only water and a very basic communal bivouac will be provided. For seven days, it’s just sand, heat, and forward movement.
This challenge is 100% self-funded. But if I’m going to cross a desert, I’d like it to count for something bigger so I’m raising money for Veterans Aid.
Veterans Aid is a UK charity that provides immediate, practical support to veterans in crisis, particularly those facing homelessness. They operate a 24/7 helpline, offer emergency accommodation, and provide tailored support to help former service persons regain independence. Crucially, they don’t turn people away, and they act fast.
Many of us think we are far from hardship, but we are often only one piece of bad luck away from it. Veterans Aid exists for those moments when everything falls apart.
If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, it would genuinely mean a great deal. And as I’m not active on social media, please feel free to share this link to help spread the word.
