Story

Burton BMA are supporting the Rob Burrow Centre for MND in memory the the late Derek Samson.

Loving to keep fit, Derek loved doing his boxing training and followed the sport. For many years he was a member of David Lloyds gym, being there almost every day.

He was a fan of Chelsea FC, along with his son Matt. One of his last enjoyable memories will have been watching them with the FIFA Club World Cup. Derek had many interests over the years, playing table tennis, badminton and learning to play the guitar are just a few examples which, along with his work as a driving instructor, he had to give up when diagnosed with MND.

He found the social isolation hard after such an active life, filled with daily interaction with others, but faced the disease with a fierce determination, positive attitude and resilience, preferring to live in hope, even when the odds were against him.

Having been diagnosed with MND in May 2024, progressing from a bad shoulder in 2023. His walking problems developed in early 2024, and as the disease progressed rapidly, he was dependent on a wheelchair by July and non-invasive ventilation by September. Derek was courageous and determined to live his best life in his final months, despite the many and varied challenges the disease threw at him. Derek never gave up the fight, demonstrating his character and strength of will. Rarely did he feel sorry for the situation he found himself in. His mantra for the last year – it is what it is – and he was still concerned for others.

Derek passed away peacefully on 15th July in The Old Lodge Nursing Home, Etwall. Funds raised in Derek's memory will help others battling with the same disease.
