Story

I am running the Great North Run 2025 to raise money for Spinal Research!

In 2020 I was diagnosed with cauda equina syndrome after a double disc herniation, Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a rare and serious neurological condition that occurs when the cauda equina, a bundle of nerve roots at the base of the spinal cord, is compressed or damaged. This can disrupt motor and sensory pathways to the bladder and lower extremities. CES is a medical emergency that requires prompt surgery to prevent permanent damage. I was one of the lucky ones who got diagnosed and operated on within the first 24 hours, I’d dread to think what my life would have been like if the surgery hadn’t been done so quickly, after 24 hours the likelihood of nerve regeneration is very slim and I may not have been able to walk again.

It took over a year to get full use of my left leg again, unfortunately I still have permanent issues I have to deal with on a daily basis, but I don’t let it get in my way.

I wanted to do this a couple of years ago but my leg just wasn’t strong enough, I feel so lucky to be strong enough now to be able to raise money for spinal research, I feel so passionate about this, any amount you can donate will be deeply appreciated.

There are an estimated 110,000 people in the UK with a Spinal Cord Injury. Living with an SCI often means a lifetime of health and care costs, as well as the threat of secondary healthcare complications.

Spinal Research is the UK's leading medical charity focused on the repair and restoration of the spinal cord, and we exist to beat paralysis.

Spinal Research do not receive governmental funding; all projects are funded by donations.

With your help, we can #CureParalysis.
