Story

Former St Peter Constable Tom du Feu is on the move again, but this time he’s hoping to help support the island’s foodbanks.

To mark his 80th Birthday in 2023 the ex-politician – who’s living with cancer - walked 80 laps of St Peter’s Football Club to raise funds for Jersey Hospice. He collected over £8,000. Now 82, he’s dusting off his walking shoes to help another cause close to his heart – the well-being of islanders caught up in the cost-of-living crisis.

As the island celebrates 80 years of Liberation, he’s been inspired by the memories of the arrival of the SS Vega with Red Cross Food Parcels to help starving islanders at the latter end of the occupation, to raise funds for those in need of help with their food bills today.

Aware of the growing reliance on foodbanks for some in in our community Tom is planning to walk from St Brelade’s Parish Hall to the memorial to the SS Vega on the Albert Pier and is inviting you to join him. He’s hoping islanders who lived through the Occupation might come and along and support him on all or part of his trek. But, everyone is welcome to join him, to help raise awareness of food poverty in the island.

Tom hopes people will be inspired by the example of those who endured the Occupation and will give generously to the support the work of The Grace Trust, Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul Foodbanks.
