Matthew's fundraiser for St Christopher's Hospice

Matthew Mungeam is raising money for St Christopher's Hospice

Climbing Ben Nevis · 3 August 2025

Every year we provide care and support to over 6,500 people across South East London, both at home and in the hospice. We passionately believe that everyone should have access to the best care at the end of their lives. We need to fundraise £19.4 million each year to continue our services

Story

Climbing Ben Nevis for Mum – Supporting St Christopher’s Hospice

Hey everyone, friends, family, and anyone kind enough to stop by,

For those who know me well, you’ll understand how much life changed back in October when we received the devastating news that my mum had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Since then, each day has been a difficult journey physically and emotionally as we do everything we can to keep her comfortable, loved, and surrounded by strength. And through it all, she continues to inspire us daily with a courage that truly humbles me.

St Christopher’s Hospice and their incredible team of nurses have been nothing short of a lifeline. The care and support they’ve given my mum, and our whole family, has meant the world and continues to do so. This fundraiser is my way of giving something back to the people who are helping us through one of the toughest chapters of our lives.

On Sunday 3rd August, I’ll be climbing Ben Nevis something I’ve always wanted to do but now with a far deeper purpose. With a few close friends by my side, I’m taking on this challenge to help raise £800 for St Christopher’s. Every penny goes directly to the hospice and their team who support families like mine, every single day.

I’ve tried to keep the goal modest, especially knowing how tough times are for so many. The amount I’ve chosen £800 represents the 8 hours it’s expected to take us to complete the climb. To me, it symbolises each hour of effort, determination, and reflection on this journey, both up the mountain and through what we’re facing as a family. But honestly, anything you can give big or small would mean the world. Your support doesn’t just go to a charity name; it goes to real people, providing real care, at the most critical moments in life.

This will be one of the biggest physical and emotional challenges I’ve ever faced but I won’t stop until I reach the top. No matter the weather. I will not fail. I’ll be vlogging the climb as best I can, and if all goes to plan, I’ll be video calling my mum from the summit because this one’s for her.

Mum, I love you more than words can ever say. It breaks my heart to see you suffer day after day, yet somehow, even on your hardest days, you still put others before yourself. You’ve always been the strongest person I know, and you show us that strength every single day. I just hope this brings a smile to your face and reminds you how many people are walking this road with us.

Thank you so much for reading, and for any support you can give. It means more than I could ever express.
