Story
My brother Max and I are taking on the London Marathon 2026 in memory of our step-father Alan and raise money for Prostate Cancer Research.
In September our step-father Alan was diagnosed with terminal cancer of prostate origin. He sadly passed in February.
Unfortunately, due to the rarity of his case, consultants were unable to determine which type of cancer it is, though they agree that the likely cause was from Alan's intense radiotherapy treatment from 17 years ago, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Alan's attitude throughout his battle was one of upmost resilience and bravery - once again proving how much of a role model he continued to be to his wife, sister, children and grandchildren.
Although Alan can no longer greet us at the finish line, we know that he will be with us every step of the way right through to the finish.
Our connection to Prostate Cancer Research started more than 15 years ago. In 2016, Alan ran the London Marathon as part of the Prostate Cancer Research team. In 2017 he, with our mother, Julie, trekked The Great Wall of China for Prostate Cancer Research too. Outside of fundraising, Alan also featured in the PCR magazine, where he spoke of his 2008 prostate cancer diagnosis (PSA 375, Gleason 5+5), and particularly about the impact of having a prognosis of 3 to 5 years. His bravery to speak about his experience has hopefully helped to inspire other sufferers and their families, offering them both hope and encouragement at such a difficult time.
It is a great honour for us to continue the incredible fundraising legacy of my mother and step-father and to stand alongside a charity that is so close to home in so many ways.
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed male cancer in the UK, yet current treatments are limited and can be harmful, particularly for the late stages.
Prostate Cancer Research funds research into more effective treatments for prostate cancer with the aim of creating a future where people are free from the impact of the disease. Your fundraising will support innovative scientists with bold ideas working collaboratively to achieve results and who put patient voice at the heart of their decisions, making a real difference to the lives of people affected.
Any donations will help us get one step closer to our target and will help to support Prostate Cancer Research in achieving their mission. Thank you!
