The Great North Run is the world’s biggest half marathon, with more than 57,000 runners pounding the streets of Newcastle. The 13.1-mile course runs from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields and attracts many world-class athletes.

Story

Cameron Slater was 23, he was young, healthy and successful with his whole life still ahead of him. On the 13th of March 2024, he went to sleep and never woke up, what happened after that is something that no family should ever have to go through.

Because of this, we have chosen to take part in the Great North Run this September to raise money for CRY, a charity that focuses on the research and prevention of sudden adult deaths. The Slater’s turned to CRY for support and in the midst of their grief have been dedicated to raising money towards potentially life saving heart screening days, in order to check for underlying conditions.

If you know us, you will know that we are far from runners and the training to get to this point has cost us sweat, tears and toenails but in Cameron’s words “no guts, no stories” and we are genuinely so proud to be running in his name.

Please help us by contributing anything you can, every penny raised will go towards supporting families affected by sudden adult deaths, raising awareness and heart screening days.

For Bernie, Daz, Chandler, Sean, Hebe and everyone else who has been impacted by his death, we are so incredibly sorry for the loss of Cam, we hope that this run contributes to keeping his name alive.

Thank you so much for your support, any donation is greatly appreciated! ❤️

Love from,

Maggie and Maya x

A message from Maya:

I have been lucky enough to have Chandler & Sean as friends for many years now, as friends do, Chan and I would go back and forth with various problems we were having and offer eachother support. But when Cameron died last year, there was nothing I could say or do to take her pain away. I was helplessly watching my friend go through the hardest time of her entire life. What they have been through is nothing short of a nightmare and 16 months on Cameron’s death is the worst reminder of how fragile life can be. This is for Cameron, but it is also for Chandler and Sean.

Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions. With your donation, CRY can reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young. By supporting CRY you will help save young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions. See how your support can help by visiting www.c-r-y.org.uk.
