Story
Each year the Mayor selects charities to support during their time in office, both by promoting them and by raising funds. In 2026 to 2027, The Mayor of Bromley Councillor Christine Harris has chosen Madlani Cancer Support and The Dyslexia Association for Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich & Lewisham. There will be opportunities to donate and support at events throughout the year.
The Dyslexia Association of Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich and Lewisham (DABBGL) provides support, guidance and information to dyslexic people of all ages. The charity was established over 50 years ago and continues to be run entirely by volunteers.
Official figures indicate that at least 1 in 10 people are dyslexic with many dyslexic children find school an uncomfortable and difficult place to be, resulting in frustration and a lack of self esteem, which can lead to severe mental health issues. Dyslexia can also occur with other neurodivergence conditions.
Dyslexic adults often conceal their daily struggles and will contact the DABBGL Helpline because they want someone to talk to who understands them and acknowledges that their difficulties are real.
DABBGL run two very active Helplines for parents/carers, adults, educators, employers, the medical profession and anyone else who wants information and support. They hold in-person and online meetings, attend information sessions at schools and Local Authority events, and liaise with education professionals and other voluntary organisations.
