Story
We are running our first half-marathon in memory of our grandad, Paddy McAteer, or better known to us as Gramps. Looking back it was quite a funny way to refer to our grandad, but it was what all of the grandchildren used to call him and saying anything else would of felt strange. Gramps passed away from bowel cancer on the 18th June 2013, when we were only 10 years old. He was only 69. Unfortunately, we didn't get many years with Gramps but we both hold fond memories of the love and laughter that we shared with him. Memorably over Christmas dinners at Boxing day with all the family, where he would sit at the head of the table, before putting on one of his favourite John Wayne films. He was a proud Irishman from Donegal, who came over to London with our Nanny, and he worked very hard to establish a base for our family. In his final days, Marie Curie provided him with the best care and support before he went to rest. They ensured he was surrounded by his loved ones in his final hours and provided valuable grief support to our family after he had passed. As young and fortunately able men, we wanted to raise money to support Marie Curie's mission and to hopefully make sure that great people like our Gramps are provided with the same high quality care and support in their final moments.
