Story

The Glasgow Care Foundation, our second nominated charity partner for the coming year, is a charity who support some of the less fortunate families and individuals in Glasgow, who cannot get help from any other source, by providing essential household goods and food supplies.

About McCrea:

McCrea Financial Services have been providing professional financial planning advice and assistance to individuals, businesses and charities since they were formed in 1999 by Managing Director, Douglas McCrea.

Based in Glasgow, but serving the whole of the UK, as well as clients abroad, McCrea pride themselves on providing a professional and friendly financial planning service.

As part of a commitment to the city where it all started, McCrea Financial Services are sponsors of a number of Glasgow based sporting teams including Glasgow Warriors and Partick Thistle, and work very hard to provide charitable support with just over £650,000 now donated to our nominated charities over the years. Last year we were able to reach our target of £30,000 raised for our nominated charity partner, Common Wheel!

To kick off our year of fundraising, we held our 13th Annual Charity Golf Day at The Duke's Course, St Andrew's in May, which was a great success and raised over £10,000 combined! You can read more about what was a brilliant day here.

In August Douglas McCrea set out on his 14th Annual Charity Walk, as he undertook the Kintyre Way to raise funds for our charity partners.

Having originally planned to do the 141km walk, Douglas happened to strike up a conversation with one of the current custodians of the Kintyre Way, who kindly let him know that they had introduced a new, longer ending of the Kintyre Way which added on an extra days walk and took the official distance to 162km! Overall Douglas actually walked 106 miles/169km over 7 days, which meant he only managed to get lost for 7km of the walk!

We were delighted to reveal that the walk raised over £12,000 for our charity partners; if you would like to read about Douglas' progress, you can find his daily blog here which includes video updates and some great pictures!

In September we held our Charity Dinner and Wine-Tasting event at Glaschu, which raised £9,296! The night consisted of a delicious three-course meal with matching wines, a brilliant performance from Britain's Got Talent semi-finalist magician Kevin Quantum, and a Charity Auction and Raffle.

Our last event of the fundraising year was our 12th Annual Charity Race Night on Friday 9th February at Hillhead Sports Club; we were ecstatic to raise a record £8,939 on the evening, with the night consisting of a delicious buffet curry, a busy bar, (sensible!) betting on the horse races, great prizes in the raffle and auction and a very competitive auction race, where the winning horse owner won £1,875! You can read our recap of the evening here.

We are one of Glasgow's oldest Charities, established in 1874 before the NHS and Welfare State, sadly our aim of alleviating poverty in the City is still the same. People are referred to us from agencies working with vulnerable people. We support some of the poorest individuals and families who cannot get help from any other source. We do not receive funding from any local or national government. The money we need to help those in need comes from capital investments made in earlier years, bequests, legacies, and donations. We often describe ourselves as the 'Small charity doing big things for Glasgow'. Our support is normally basic items such as cookers, washing machines, beds, furniture and flooring. Within one week we can be delivering items to a family that make an immediate impact on their personal situation. We also support families with supermarket vouchers to buy food as this is an ever-increasing plight for a lot of people. At Christmas we provide Vouchers and Gifts to those most in need for Christmas morning. There are 37,000 children living in poverty in Glasgow today. We also process around 15 community grants annually to benefit the wider community with projects, educational grants, transport, and other needs. If you or your company are looking for a Charity of the Year or doing some fundraising activities, we would appreciate you keeping us in mind as a potential beneficiary and we would welcome a conversation with you.
