Story
In August 2026, I will be attempting to solo swim the English Channel to raise funds for STARS (Syncope Trust And Reflex Anoxic Seizures), a small but incredibly impactful UK charity that supports people affected by syncope, reflex anoxic seizures (RAS), and related unexplained loss of consciousness. I've benefited from STARS’ support myself, and I know first-hand the difference they can make.
Swimming has always been a big part of my life. I was a competitive swimmer when I was younger, it has given me lifelong friends, helped me manage my health, and taught me that sometimes the hardest challenges are also the most rewarding.
As a bit of background, the English Channel is roughly 21 miles (often much longer, thanks to currents) across busy shipping lanes, with the occasional jellyfish in tow. For some reason, you’re meant to swim it without a wetsuit and not touch the boat or anyone else until you reach France — a piece of cake really!
STARS provides vital support, guidance, and resources for individuals and families navigating syncope and RAS. They also raise awareness among healthcare professionals and the public, helping people receive the understanding and support they need. Being a small charity, they rely heavily on fundraising, so every donation makes a huge difference.
I want to challenge myself physically and mentally, and at the same time help STARS continue their incredible work supporting people who are often overlooked. If you can, please support my swim — your donation will be massively appreciated and will give me some extra motivation when I’m shivering in the cold Channel. Also, if anyone has any good ideas for things to keep my mind busy while swimming solo for 16 hours, I’m all ears!
All my love,
Meg xxx
