125 mile 5 day challenge · 23 April 2023

HUGE specifically provides financial and resource support to the Nabugabo Community Learning Centre, a primary school set up in 2012, solely to provide free education and support to vulnerable and disadvantaged children, who would otherwise not be able to attend school. It is located in South West Uganda in a rural and very poor area approximately 150kms south west of Kampala. The social purpose of HUGE is to provide these children with an education through high quality teaching in a dynamic, caring and safe environment. The long term aim of HUGE is to support the children of NCLC on their educational journey and to enable them to realise their ambitions. Above all the welfare of the children is paramount.

Story

In memory of my dear Mum and Dad, who loved Cornwall, I am undertaking a 125 mile solo walk along the south west coast from Cadgewith, their favourite place, to Treyarnon Bay, in 5 days starting on the 23rd April and hopefully completing on the 27th April if all goes well (minimum elevation gain each day 3500 ft).

The inspiration behind this challenge is my amazing Mum who, despite having difficult health issues to contend with including having a leg amputated, never complained about her lot, had a wonderful sense of humour and was incredibly loving and kind. We miss her.

I am doing the challenge in aid of two charities very close to my heart. Firstly, The HUGE Partnership which is a small UK charity which funds a wonderful primary school in Uganda for disadvantaged and vulnerable children and thereafter supports them at a local secondary school. There are currently almost 180 children in full time education. Despite the poverty and enormous challenges the community faces, it is an amazing place and I feel very fortunate to be playing a small part in its development.

Secondly, I am doing the challenge in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care. Sadly, probably not unlike many of you, several of my family and friends have been impacted by cancer and I would like to use this walk as a reminder of all those who are or have had to contend with this terrible disease and importantly, their friends and family.

I very much hope you will sponsor me and as a guide it would be brilliant if you could split your donation equally between the two charities. Unfortunately, Just Giving is unable to automatically do this, hence the team page! I have trained hard and hope I will do the challenge, do my Mum justice, and importantly raise loads of money.
