Story
in celebration of this monumental period for me, I am asking those of you who feel able to, to consider making a donation to the work of White Ribbon Foundation.
The story of Hurricane “Melissa” was a moment’s news. As one of the strongest hurricanes ever documented in the Atlantic, Hurricane Melissa brought catastrophic damage to Jamaica and Cuba — yet the message of this seemed under-relayed.
Quickly our attention on the destruction was guided away from our focus. Stories of its impact on inhabitants given no further mention.
White Ribbon is a small charity with its main office being based in the UK. The charity began 34 years ago in Canada as a way to help and prevent gender based violence carried out by men towards women.
In the aftermath of the recent hurricane in Jamaica, White Ribbon is providing support to mothers, parents and children who have been impacted.
Things that we might easily take for granted: soaps and menstrual supplies, safe birth and newborn kits, hygiene and safety kits; support for a mother and child after recovery. The cost for provision of some of these things may be minimal - but it could make a huge difference to the daily lives and dignity of some women, children and families.
I feel fortunate to be able to celebrate this milestone year. I also feel fortunate to be able to celebrate alongside many of those people who have been part of my own journey of growth in some way.
Giving something back to people in need whose lives are seemingly undervalued - by way of this charity - is just one small way I can express this gratitude. And if you feel able to support me in supporting White Ribbon that would mean a lot to me.
Thank you in advance for any donation you feel you can make.
Melissa xx
