The Challenge

Over the next six weeks, I’ll be cycling 300 miles through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the West, beneath the giant sequoias of Kings Canyon, past the towering red sandstone peaks of Red Rock Canyon, and through Sacramento, the City of Trees.

This journey will culminate in the Sacramento Century Ride on September 4, 2025, where I’ll ride 100+ miles in a single day. You can follow my journey on Instagram: @MelReclaims.

Why I Ride

For over a decade, cycling has given me a sense of adventure, freedom, and power. Feelings I desperately craved growing up as an undocumented child.

I spent nine years living in the shadows, afraid of any interaction with authority. I remember praying during ICE raids in Union City, NJ that my mother wouldn’t be taken. At age 12, I helped pack up our apartment and move within hours after my brother was arrested and deported while trying to leave the country.

Today, I’m a 34-year-old working professional living what some would call the “American Dream.” But I often ask myself: at what cost?

My childhood was shaped by fear, shame, and uncertainty. My family was torn apart. I still carry the mental and physical scars of that trauma.

And this country is still inflicting that pain on people who are simply trying to feed their children.

There are still seven-year-old little Melissas living in fear.

I’m riding 300 miles to raise $3,000 for NorCal Resist, an organization that directly supports immigrant families with bond payments, court accompaniment, and mutual aid.

El Desafío

Durante las próximas seis semanas, recorreré 300 millas en bicicleta por algunos de los paisajes más impresionantes del Oeste, bajo las gigantescas sequoias de Kings Canyon, pasando por los imponentes picos de arenisca roja de Red Rock Canyon y atravesando Sacramento, la Ciudad de los Árboles.

Por qué monto en bicicleta

Durante más de una década, el ciclismo me ha dado una sensación de aventura, libertad y poder. Sentimientos que anhelaba desesperadamente mientras crecía como una niña indocumentada.

Pasé nueve años viviendo en la sombra, temerosa de cualquier interacción con la autoridad. Recuerdo rezar durante las redadas de la migra en Union City, Nueva Jersey, para que no se llevaran a mi madre. A los 12 años, ayudé a empacar nuestro apartamento y a mudarnos pocas horas después de que arrestaran y deportaran a mi hermano mientras intentaba salir del país.

Hoy, soy una profesional de 34 años que vive lo que algunos llamarían el "sueño americano". Pero a menudo me pregunto: ¿a qué precio?

Mi infancia estuvo marcada por el miedo, la vergüenza y la incertidumbre. Mi familia quedó destrozada. Aún cargo con las cicatrices mentales y físicas de ese trauma.

Y este país sigue infligiendo ese dolor a personas que simplemente intentan alimentar a sus hijos.

Todavía hay pequeñas Melissas de siete años que viven con miedo.
