Fundraising For Tameside Hospital Critical Care Unit Memorial Garden

As the official charity of Tameside & Glossop IC NHSFT, we support our staff, patients and their families who are receiving care from Tameside Hospital and in our community settings. Our hospital and community services provide care everyday and are there for us all from day one of our lives.

Story

On the 28th August 2025, Mark was admitted into Tameside Hospital Critical Care Unit, after suffering two cardiac arrests, brought on by a seizure.

The paramedics worked on Mark for half an hour and managed to bring him back. However, on the way to the hospital, Mark had another cardiac arrest, again the paramedics worked on him for half an hour, and brought him back.

Mark was taken straight to the critical care unit.

Having never been on a critical unit, what to expect, see or do, was quite daunting. We really needn't have worried, from our arrival onto the unit, everything was explained to us in so much detail. Everything they did to Mark was explained.

Even though Mark had been ventilated, and had been sedated, we spoke to him every day, as did the amazing team on this unit. They didn't just take bloods, they apologised to Mark for having to take more blood. Speaking to Mark, even though he was unconscious, and, as a mother, this meant the world. Numerous tests were done but Mark was unresponsive. Due to the lack of oxygen from both arrests, his brain was not responding. The heartbreaking decision was made to turn off the ventilator, however, something amazing comes from something so tragic. Mark was on the organ donor register and ventilation continued, whilst recipients were found.

On the 2nd September 2025, Mark gained his superhero hero wings, and saved five lives.

Myself and Alan his stepdad since the age of 11, walked behind Marks bed and he was moved to theatre. As we came out of the unit, Mark received a guard of honour, with all the team lining the corridor. It broke our hearts. We were so proud of Mark, now we want his legacy for organ donation to continue, and to keep Mark's memory alive.

If there had been a space like a memorial garden we could have gone to, just to sit and make those phone calls, and reflect, it would have been so nice.

So, I am hoping to help raise money for the Critical Care Unit Memorial Garden.

A place not just for relatives, but for Critical care patients also.

I vowed to keep Marks legacy and memory going, and this I will continue to do.

He loved to draw, and some of his pictures I have put on this page.

Anything you can give, well, from the bottom of my heart would be appreciated so much.

Let's do this.!!!
