Story
I always said I’d never run a marathon for charity, not because I don’t care, but because I didn’t want the added pressure of fundraising on top of the training and the London Marathon is something I want to do for me.
But after being lucky enough to get a place through the ballot, I’ve decided to use the opportunity to support a charity that genuinely helped me over the past year.
As some of you know, last July I was involved in a serious bike accident during Ironman Leeds. The physical injuries were tough, but the mental impact of the trauma was just as challenging.
Once I’d "recovered" physically (if we forget about the restricted breathing that reared its head as I started training), I realised there was still a lot I hadn’t processed, especially after a difficult and emotional Christmas period, where I would just randomly start crying.
In January I reached out to Day One, a charity supporting people who’ve experienced major trauma to see if they could help me understand my thoughts.
Their support was incredible. They connected me with a counsellor who helped me work through the thoughts and emotions I was struggling with and guided me through a part of the recovery that often goes unseen.
So, this year, as I take on the marathon, I’m going to try and raise some much needed funds to support Day One, to give something back and to help others access the same support when they need it most.
Thank you so much for any donation, big or small. It truly means a lot.
