Chillswim: Windermere 2026
Campaign by Level Water (RCN 1151510)
This is the longest swim in England. Who doesn’t want to say they’ve swum end to end of the longest lake in the country?!

Story

In 2026 I’m taking on a series of swimming challenges to raise money for Level Water, a charity providing 1-to-1 swimming lessons for children with disabilities.

So far this year:

In April, I swam one mile every hour for 24 hours at the Swim the Night event at Guildford Lido.

In July, I completed the Dart 10K, accompanying my niece on one of the UK’s most iconic open-water swims.

Next up is my biggest challenge of the year: on 5 September I’ll attempt to swim the 11-mile length of Windermere — without a wetsuit.

I may add further swimming challenges before the year is out, assuming my enthusiasm continues to exceed my common sense.

Back in the 1970s I worked as a lifeguard and, over the years, have helped save a number of people from drowning. A couple of years ago I requalified to bring my lifesaving skills up to date.

Swimming has taught me how enjoyable and liberating being in the water can be — but also how dangerous it can be for those who never get the opportunity to learn properly.

Level Water provides inclusive swimming lessons across the country, including here in Lambeth, giving children with disabilities the opportunity to learn to swim and enjoy the water.

If you can spare a few pounds, please help them provide more children with life-changing swimming lessons.

Thank you for your support.
