Lisbon Half Marathon · 9 March 2025 ·

We decided a community project for a statue of Tommy Gemmell, would be a wonderful way to honour his legacy and contributions to the sport. We will be organising fundraising events to finance the creation and installation of the statue and raise money for the local community.

Story

“That was some goal in the European Cup final,” - O’neill

“Which one, son?” - Gemmell

Tommy Gemmell, the left-footed right-sided fullback, reached the pinnacle of his legendary career in 1967 when he scored, what Bertie Auld always attested to be, the most important goal in Celtic’s history. That powerful strike helped Celtic secure a 2-1 victory in the European Cup final, immortalising Gemmell as one of the iconic Lisbon Lions.

A small group of us are running a half marathon in Lisbon, and it feels only fitting to raise funds for the Tommy Gemmell Community Project. The project was created to honour Tommy’s legacy and his immense contribution to the game. Please join us in celebrating his memory, as we strive to raise funds for this great charity.
