Michaela Reid is raising money for Mrs Murray's Home for Stray Dogs and Cats

Run Garioch · 10 May 2026

to provide temporary home for lost dogs and cats and where possible to restore them to their owners or find suitable new homes for them

Story

Acknowledged as one of the oldest charities in Aberdeen Mrs Murray’s Home for Stray Dogs and Cats was founded by Mrs Susan Murray as a place of refuge and shelter for stray and abandoned dogs and cats, it was officially opened by Lord Provost Henderson on the 18th September 1889.

For nearly 136 years, including two world wars, the Great Depression, numerous recessions and two global pandemics the ‘institution’ of Mrs Murray’s Home has continued to provide care and rehoming services for stray, abandoned or unwanted animals in Aberdeen City and the surrounding area.

Over the decades Mrs Murray’s has expanded and adapted the care and rehoming facilities to cater for a wide variety of small animals and currently rehomes up to 500 animals per year. The Home also now offers animal boarding facilities to help sustain its charitable activities and last year alone boarded over 2,000 animals ranging from hamsters to Great Danes.

🏆The dedication and commitment to looking after the animals within the home’s care were recently recognised when Mrs Murray’s was awarded the “Pet Charity of the Year 2025” by Pet Awards Scotland.🏆

‼️Mrs Murray's is a local charity does not receive any Government or Lottery funding and relies on legacies, donations and the above-mentioned boarding income to support all the work that it does for the animals of the North East.‼️

🌟Mrs Murray’s Board of Trustees has recently approved a project to replace the dog rehoming kennels. The current facilities are outdated and cramped, and do not offer a suitable environment for rehabilitating, often traumatised dogs, while they are awaiting their forever home. The New Block, located within our existing site, will incorporate the latest recommendations and guidance regarding animal welfare and safety standards.🌟

🤩It will create 21 modern kennel units, each comprising of a heated sleeping area and a dedicated outdoor run. In addition to creating a spacious and comfortable environment for the dogs the new facilities will also create an ideal viewing space for members of the public wishing to find a new family member. 🤩 The key benefits of the new facilities are as follows:

🐾A secure and hygienic environment where the dogs can feel safe.

🐾Dedicated indoor sleep area and outdoor exercise area allowing the dogs to select where they wish to be at all times.

🐾An environment where reactive dogs cannot see neighbouring dogs.

🐾A dedicated ‘Maternity Unit’ specifically created for nursing mothers and their pups.

🐾A calmer and quieter environment with glazed screens replacing the traditional wire mesh.

🐾A safe and controlled viewing area for the public.

🐾Hygienic, easy clean units.

🐾A large, purpose-built food preparation area.

🐾Ample secure storage for medication, food and bedding supplies.
