Essex & Herts Air Ambulance aim to save lives and reduce or prevent disability or suffering from critical illness and injury by delivering a first-class pre-hospital emergency medical service across Essex, Hertfordshire, and surrounding areas.
Unlike NHS emergency services, EHAAT is a charity and recieves no direct government funding. The free life-saving service is provided 24/7 by 2 helicopters and 4 rapid response vehicles.
It costs in excess of £9 million every year to cover all operational and charitable costs.
Essex Air Ambulance was established and began fundraising in 1997 with their first aircraft, a Bölkow 105 DB, began operating from Boreham Airfield in 1998.
By 1999 they began flying seven days a week and launched the Motorcycle Run fundraising event, which has played a vital part in raising funds to keep the charity operational and continuously striving for improvement over the last 20+ years.
