As colleagues in the North West Social Impact Team at Microsoft, we are deeply committed to making a positive difference in our community. This year, we are absolutely thrilled (and, let’s be honest, a little bit terrified!) to take part in the Manchester Charity Dragon Boat Challenge on Saturday 22nd June 2024, raising vital funds for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital holds a special place in our hearts. Each of us has a personal story about how the hospital has touched our lives or the lives of our loved ones. From providing exceptional care to offering hope during challenging times, the hospital's impact is profound and far-reaching. With over 2 million patients visiting The Manchester University NHS Trust Hospitals annually, the need for continued support and resources is immense.

Now, about the Dragon Boat Race—most of us have never even seen a Dragon Boat, let alone raced in one! We’re talking about a bunch of techies who are more comfortable with keyboards than paddles. Some of us are even a bit afraid of drowning (don’t worry, life jackets are mandatory!). But we are ready to face our fears, embrace the splash, and paddle our hearts out for the children and families who rely on the hospital's care.

The event promises a vibrant festival atmosphere, the thrill of the race, and a chance to compete in authentic Chinese Dragon Boats. Picture us in our slightly mismatched team gear, attempting to synchronise our paddling while our brave drummer (who is also a patient at the Royal Manchester Children's' Hospital and probably the only person with rhythm) tries to keep us in line. We will have to do this 3 times over 200 m, and if we qualify, we will have to do it again! It's going to be a hilarious, unforgettable day!

What's even more inspiring is that Microsoft will match every penny we raise, doubling our impact and helping us to support the hospital even more effectively. So, whether you join us in the boat, cheer us on from the sidelines, or contribute to our fundraising, your support will make a significant difference.
