Story
Like many others, unfortunately, the last year has seen cancer impact the lives of my family and a number of close friends, and we sadly said goodbye to a good friend only last month. However, I want to share the following story of courage and hope with you...
At just 24 years old, our friend’s daughter, Alice Greaves from Old Dalby, Leicestershire, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two years on since her diagnosis, Alice, has undergone a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction surgery.
In May 2024, she was told the cancer had spread to her lungs. She had five tumours over her two lungs. Then, in March 2025, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Alice is currently living with stage four breast cancer, which she says is treatable, but incurable.
She is dedicated to raising awareness and fundraising for the incredible cancer research and trials that are happening locally and so, on the 23rd August 2025, whilst undergoing chemotherapy, Alice, and many others (me included), are cycling from Old Dalby, Leicestershire to Sheringham, Norfolk, a journey of 125 miles/202 kilometres in one day. Last year, Alice raised more than £96,000 for the charity by cycling the same distance.
Since her diagnosis, Alice has raised more than £250,000 for cancer charities. She is also an ambassador for the Leicester-based charity, Hope Against Cancer. In recognition of her fundraising work, Alice was also recently invited to Buckingham Palace, to meet the King.
The ride this year is again in aid of Hope Against Cancer, a local charity that funds cancer research and supports treatment and trials at the Hope Cancer Trials Centre in the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Alice's ultimate goal is to "save lives". On social media sites such as Tik Tok and Instagram, under the handle "If anyone can, Alice can", she documents the highs and lows of life with cancer, speaking openly about her misdiagnosis, and how symptoms in younger people are often overlooked.
To do my bit, I will be cycling 1,000 miles (55,000 feet of climbing) in 10 days from Land's End to John o'Groats, starting on the 7th August. Then, as long as I'm still standing, I will be joining Alice on the Saturday after I finish for on her 125 mile ride to Sheringham.
I know you probably get bombarded with requests for sponsorship. If, having read the above, you are able to make a small donation to this fantastic cause, I will be very grateful x
