Mike’s miles for music: Sahara Challenge!

Sustainability Institute is raising money for Lynedoch Village - Prism the Gift Fund

Marathon Des Sables Legendary 2027 · 2 April 2027 to 12 April 2027 · Start fundraising for this event

We work with families in Lynedoch, Stellenbosch, to ensure every child gets the best chance. We help the youth get into work through mentoring & ongoing practical support. Lynedoch Village is a restricted fund operating under the auspices of Prism the Gift Fund, (RCN no 1099682).

Story

In celebration of Mike’s (AKA Micky Styx!) 60th birthday, he will be participating in the Marathon des Sables in Morocco from 2 - 12 Apr 2027: a self-supported stage race consisting of over 6 marathons in 6 days across the Sahara Desert. For a week he, and many other participants, will live to the rhythm of the dunes, exploring majestic natural environments where humans are mere guests in a raw and preserved wilderness.

This rhythm for beauty, adventure and appreciation is something that is naturally part of Mike’s life as a musician. He also has a big heart for children, and is bringing together his passion for adventure and music to help make a big dream come true for the children and youth in Lynedoch Valley, South Africa.

The challenge? To raise £10 000 by April 2027 to set-up a brand new music room at the Lynedoch Community School! Your support will make this goal possible. Please support Mike by making a donation - every pound raised makes a difference!

This makes our hearts truly beat with a sense of joy and possibility!

We are not able to offer music lessons to the learners, yet we know that:

- it builds brain pathways for reading and math,

- teaches self-control through rhythm,

- boosts body coordination,

- and gives children a safe way to share big feelings.

It is also great fun! Many children have natural musical talents, but due to no or limited access to instruments and structured music experiences, these can’t be developed. View a video of our school here.

Your support will act as an amplifier and we ask that you help us reach the high notes of this ambitious fundraiser by making a donation! Please also help us turn up the volume to 11 by sharing this call for support with your community.

Every child deserves to experience the joy of music. Please help Mike, and us, to make this possible. Then together, we can create a beautiful new song of possibility.
