Story
The Passage is a homeless shelter aiming to end street homelessness through compassionate intervention and advocacy. They get people off the streets and into sustainable employment and accommodation.
I volunteer in the soup kitchen in Passage House and have loved getting to know some of the temporary residents. The Passage has helped them resolve immigration cases, borrow laptops and wash themselves and their clothes. One lady arrived with memory loss. She didn’t know how she had arrived in the UK and had been forced to work in various restaurants and as an unpaid housekeeper for a year. The Passage supported her in reporting everything to the police and reconnected her with her daughter who had been looking for her for 2 years.
Together with some (of their most fearless) volunteers, I'll be abseiling down the Lloyd's/Inside-Out Building in July! There’s been a rapid increase in people using The Passage's services over the past year and donations we get will fund their work.
While you’re here, here's some advice I’ve learnt from visitors. Saying hello to or just smiling at someone on the street goes a long way. Getting too close can be intimidating but a soft conversation is normally appreciated.
