Women’s Aid Federation of England is the national charity working against domestic abuse. Alongside our campaigning, training, and advocacy work, our support services, including our No Woman Turned Away project, break down barriers preventing survivors from accessing refuge.

My Story – And Why I’m Jumping for Women’s Aid

By Miriam Lake

I never imagined that one day I would be sharing my story publicly — let alone jumping out of a plane to raise money for other women.

I am a survivor of historic child abuse. For many years, I carried that pain in silence. But in 2022, I found the courage to speak out. My perpetrator was convicted, and following an appeal, the sentence was increased to four years. That chapter of my life was painful and exhausting, but it was also the beginning of something powerful — taking back control.

Since then, I have chosen not just to survive, but to use my voice.

Today, I campaign and raise awareness for Women’s Aid because I know firsthand how vital support services are. When someone feels trapped, frightened or alone, organisations like Women’s Aid can be the lifeline that helps them rebuild.

This skydive is more than just a challenge.

It’s a symbol.

It represents:

• Facing fear

• Taking back power

• Turning pain into purpose

• Showing other survivors that healing is possible

I have already been overwhelmed by the kindness and support I’ve received. Knowing that people believe in this cause — and in me — means more than I can put into words.

My story will also be featured in Chat Magazine, and instead of accepting payment for sharing it, I asked for all proceeds to go directly to Women’s Aid. Every opportunity I have now, I want it to make a difference.

If you are able to donate, please know that your contribution is not just money — it is hope. It is safety. It is strength for someone who may desperately need it.

And if you are a survivor reading this:

You are not broken. You are not alone. And your voice matters.

Thank you for supporting this journey with me.

With gratitude,

Miriam Lake 💛
